Finnish group Apocalyptica, known for merging classical music elements with rock through their use of cellos, have announced their latest project, “Plays Metallica Vol. 2,” a follow-up to their debut Metallica tribute album from 1996. This new album will feature a collection of Metallica covers, continuing Apocalyptica’s tradition of reinterpreting the iconic band’s music.
A highlight of the upcoming album is Apocalyptica’s collaboration with Metallica’s bassist, Robert Trujillo, on the track “The Four Horsemen.” For a taste of this unique fusion, listen to the track below:
Discussing the album, Apocalyptica’s Eicca Toppinen shared, “It’s the coolest thing. We didn’t push — it was offered.” He explained the group’s approach to this project: “We played the first album live and it was so much more fun and exciting than we expected, so we got the idea to do something like the first album, but we couldn’t do it in exactly the same way – we needed to challenge ourselves and bring a totally new perspective to the original energy and emotion of Metallica.”
“Plays Metallica Vol. 2” is scheduled for release on June 7th and will feature several of Metallica’s well-known tracks, including “Ride the Lightning,” “One,” and “The Call of Ktulu,” among others.
