ESP unveils LTD Signature Series Mike Leon MLB-4

Discover the ESP LTD Signature Series Mike Leon MLB-4 Bass, a collaboration with Soulfly's bass player.

ESP has recently unveiled the LTD Signature Series Mike Leon MLB-4 Bass at this year’s NAMM event, a collaboration that showcases the expertise of ESP and the distinctive style of Mike Leon, known for his work with Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy. The design of this signature bass draws heavily from the LTD B Series, which Leon has favoured for its reliability and performance.

“Inspired by the design of Mike’s ESP Custom Shop bass, the MLB-4 makes its unique impression with a textured sandblasted finish on its swamp ash body, a complementing black satin headstock, and a silky smooth open-pore finish on the back of its extra-thin five-piece wenge/purpleheart neck,” ESP explains. This design is not only visually striking but also built to withstand the demands of rigorous touring schedules.

One of the standout features of the MLB-4 is its construction, which includes a sturdy 6-bolt design and a 35” scale length, enhancing the instrument’s ability to produce deep, resonant tones. The swamp ash body contributes to the bass’s robust sound profile, while the unique combination of wenge and purpleheart in the neck adds both durability and a touch of elegance.

The MLB-4’s fretboard is crafted from Macassar ebony, known for its smooth feel and durability, and features offset mother-of-pearl dot inlays and 24 extra-jumbo stainless steel frets.

Electronics are a crucial aspect of any electric bass, and the MLB-4 is equipped with a pair of Nordstrand Big Splits pickups and a ABQ-3MS preamp which allows for a wide range of tonal shaping. The inclusion of Gotoh tuners and a Gotoh 404BO-4 hardtail bridge further emphasizes the instrument’s focus on quality and reliability.

Priced at $2,099, the ESP LTD Signature Series Mike Leon MLB-4 is set to be a valuable addition for bassists seeking a high-quality instrument with a unique aesthetic and versatile sound capabilities.

With over two decades of experience in the music industry, I've worn many hats - from running a record label and a PR agency to contributing to esteemed publications like Metal Hammer and Terrorizer. I've also authored books on iconic subjects such as Kurt Cobain's guitars and The Beatles. My journey led me to the editor's chair of Guitarrista, a print magazine dedicated to the crafts of guitar playing and building. Despite this diverse background, my true passion has always leaned towards the bass guitar. I have a particular fondness for offset basses and play a Thunderbird.
