“I don’t think I could play anything else” – Deadyellow’s Tim Fultano on his Dunable R2 Bass and crafting emotive soundscapes

Deadyellow's Tim Fultano discusses using his Dunable R2 bass and Darkglass B7K Ultra pedal in the band's latest album.

Deadyellow, a post-black metal band from New Jersey, released their second full-length album What Was Left of Them on February 2nd, 2024. Bass player Tim Fultano shared his experiences and insights from the recording process in a recent interview with Bass Empire.

Tim Fultano explained his selection of instruments and equipment for the album, emphasizing their role in shaping its sound. “So, I play a Dunable R2 bass on this record. It has a similar look and feel to a Gibson RD, which initially drew me to this model. Once I played it, I was hooked,” Fultano noted. “It’s truly become such an integral part of my bass rig, I don’t think I could play anything else.”

Regarding his gear setup, Fultano highlighted key components that defined the album’s bass tones. “My main tone comes from the Darkglass B7K Ultra pedal, which I’ll switch the distortion on and off, but the pedal itself always stays on. The other most important part of my rig is my amp head. I use the Quilter Bass Block 802, and I absolutely love it. I saw Deafheaven on their Infinite Granite tour, and Chris was using this amp; I was floored by how good it sounded, I had to get one.”

Fultano also delved into the emotional depths of the creative process for What Was Left of Them. “We were all individually going through a lot, and I think that’s why there’s so much raw emotion in the bass lines I was writing,” he shared. “Everything felt very free-flowing and natural in the writing process, and I think that’s because the music was letting me express those feelings I otherwise couldn’t get out.”

When asked about his hopes for the audience’s takeaway from the album, Fultano expressed a simple yet profound desire: “All I ever want for anyone who ever listens to Deadyellow is just to feel. ‘What Was Left of Them’ is a powerful, beautiful, tragic record. If I’m able to write any music and it makes someone, anyone, feel something, that means the world to me. We’re going to be playing shows on the East Coast over the summer months to promote the record, as well as releasing multiple physical ways to listen to it. We are already over the moon with the response to the record, and we are so excited to tap into new markets and see what we’re made of.”

With over two decades of experience in the music industry, I've worn many hats - from running a record label and a PR agency to contributing to esteemed publications like Metal Hammer and Terrorizer. I've also authored books on iconic subjects such as Kurt Cobain's guitars and The Beatles. My journey led me to the editor's chair of Guitarrista, a print magazine dedicated to the crafts of guitar playing and building. Despite this diverse background, my true passion has always leaned towards the bass guitar. I have a particular fondness for offset basses and play a Thunderbird.
