“It’s the best band I ever played in” – Nick Oliveri reflects on his time with Queens of the Stone Age

Nick Oliveri reflects on his time with Queens of the Stone Age, discussing their peak lineup during 'Songs for the Deaf.'

In an interview with Guitar World, former Queens of the Stone Age bassist Nick Oliveri shared his thoughts about his time with the band, particularly during their work on the album Songs for the Deaf.

“I think we kind of peaked out,” Oliveri said. “You had Dave Grohl on drums, Mark Lanegan on vocals, I’m on bass and vocals, and Josh is on guitar and vocals. It’s kind of hard to do better, you know?”

He explained the unique chemistry that made that particular lineup exceptional. “There’s no way you can continue something like that with different members. I don’t see it as possible. I think that’s the main choice for most people as their definitive lineup because it’s the best lineup there was. It’s the best band I ever played in. I’ve yet to play in a band of such greatness and be surrounded by such greatness.”

Regarding the possibility of rejoining Queens of the Stone Age, Oliveri stated, “I would do it, but it’s not my decision anymore. It’s Josh’s, and, well, I don’t really see him giving up what he’s got for bringing a partner in for his thing. He’s already gotten moving well on his own now. I would do it, but that’s on him.”

Despite any professional separation, Oliveri confirmed that he and Homme remain close. “We still pick up where we left off whenever we see each other. We still talk on the phone. We’re still good friends. Josh is a good dude, and we get along well. I wish him all the success in the world.”

Currently, Oliveri is active with his band Mondo Generator.

With over two decades of experience in the music industry, I've worn many hats - from running a record label and a PR agency to contributing to esteemed publications like Metal Hammer and Terrorizer. I've also authored books on iconic subjects such as Kurt Cobain's guitars and The Beatles. My journey led me to the editor's chair of Guitarrista, a print magazine dedicated to the crafts of guitar playing and building. Despite this diverse background, my true passion has always leaned towards the bass guitar. I have a particular fondness for offset basses and play a Thunderbird.
