Metallica mourns loss of fan at Edmonton concert

Metallica mourns the loss of a fan during their Edmonton concert. Details on the incident, tour updates, and band's tribute included.

Metallica have expressed their condolences following the death of a fan, known affectionately as ‘Viking,’ during their concert in Edmonton, Canada, on August 23. The incident occurred as the band continues their M72 World Tour.

The band addressed the tragic event on social media on August 28, stating: “Friday night, August 23rd, in Edmonton, we lost a Metallica family member at the show. He died due to health conditions. Leaving the earthly body and onto the next adventure. Very sad when death happens, but we’re touched that he spent some of his final, hopefully joyful, time with us.” They extended their “condolences to the family and friends of Lorne ‘Viking.’ With Love and Respect, Metallica.”

A friend of Lorne’s described the circumstances in a post within a Metallica fan group on Facebook. According to the post, Lorne was taken from the ‘Snake Pit’ area on a stretcher and received immediate medical attention. His friend remembered him as “the kindest soul,” urging others, “We all called him Viking. He will be missed terribly! Please crank up a Metallica song, and raise a glass for the Viking.”

Metallica’s M72 World Tour supports their 2023 album, ’72 Seasons’, and includes various opening acts such as Mammoth WVH, Pantera, Ice Nine Kills, and Five Finger Death Punch. Following their Edmonton performance, the band is scheduled to play next in Seattle, Washington, on September 1.

With over two decades of experience in the music industry, I've worn many hats - from running a record label and a PR agency to contributing to esteemed publications like Metal Hammer and Terrorizer. I've also authored books on iconic subjects such as Kurt Cobain's guitars and The Beatles. My journey led me to the editor's chair of Guitarrista, a print magazine dedicated to the crafts of guitar playing and building. Despite this diverse background, my true passion has always leaned towards the bass guitar. I have a particular fondness for offset basses and play a Thunderbird.
