Metallica releases new video featuring unseen Cliff Burton photographs

Metallica have released a new music video for '(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth,' featuring unseen photos of late bassist Cliff Burton from their 1985-86 tours.

Metallica have released a new music video for (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth, a bass solo performed by their late bassist Cliff Burton, featured on the band’s debut album, Kill ‘Em All. The video includes previously unseen photographs of Burton taken during the band’s tours in 1985 and 1986. These images were captured by photographer Russ Marino, and while a few were published in magazines at the time, the majority are being revealed for the first time.

The newly released material is part of a broader tribute to Burton’s legacy, available on Metallica’s Black Box platform. The collection, titled Orion: A Tribute to Cliff Burton, features a range of media, including photos, videos, and interviews. Metallica has worked closely with the Burton family to honour the late bassist’s contribution to the band’s history and this tribute aims to offer fans a deeper connection to Burton’s life and music.

Burton joined Metallica in 1982 after being recruited from his former band, Trauma. His insistence on staying in San Francisco led the group to relocate from Los Angeles. He was instrumental in shaping Metallica’s early sound, contributing to albums such as Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets. Burton also co-wrote several of the band’s most iconic tracks, including For Whom the Bell Tolls and Master of Puppets.

Tragically, Burton’s career was cut short when he died in a bus accident in Sweden on 27 September 1986, at the age of 24. Following his death, Metallica continued with Jason Newsted as his replacement, and Robert Trujillo later joined in 2003.

Cliff Burton’s legacy has been commemorated in various ways over the years. In 2018, Alameda County declared February 10th Cliff Burton Day in recognition of his influence. His impact is further documented in the book To Live Is to Die: The Life and Death of Metallica’s Cliff Burton, published in 2009, with a foreword by Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett.

With over two decades of experience in the music industry, I've worn many hats - from running a record label and a PR agency to contributing to esteemed publications like Metal Hammer and Terrorizer. I've also authored books on iconic subjects such as Kurt Cobain's guitars and The Beatles. My journey led me to the editor's chair of Guitarrista, a print magazine dedicated to the crafts of guitar playing and building. Despite this diverse background, my true passion has always leaned towards the bass guitar. I have a particular fondness for offset basses and play a Thunderbird.
