Nordstrand Audio launches PolyVox Multi-Coil Bass Pickups

Explore the new PolyVox multi-coil bass pickups from Nordstrand Audio, designed for enhanced tone clarity and precision.

Nordstrand Audio has recently unveiled its latest creation, the PolyVox multi-coil pickups. This launch, is described by the company as “the ultimate expression of Carey’s lifelong search for the most inspiring and musically evocative bass tone.”

A key feature of the PolyVox pickups is the isolation of each string’s transducer, which “profoundly alters the resonance of each pickup,” according to the company’s statement. This design approach leads to a “far flatter, more ‘transparent’ frequency response” when compared to traditional pickup designs, promising an improved clarity and fidelity in the reproduction of bass tones.

The pickups are characterised by their asymmetrical angled coils, which are combined with a proprietary Alnico magnet load and ceramic bars. This configuration is intended to deliver a robust output within a completely passive design framework. Nordstrand Audio assures that this innovation allows bass players to “enjoy the multitudinous benefits of a fully passive multi-coil pickup system.”

Designed to be compatible with any 4, 5, or 6 string bass that accommodates the standard soapbar shape, the PolyVox pickups offer versatility for a wide range of instruments. Additional features include laser-cut, fiber bobbins and a unique potting process using a paraffin-beeswax mix, aimed at eliminating unwanted frequencies and ensuring a clean tone.

The pickups are available in various configurations, including single neck, single bridge, or as a set, and come with a standard spacing of 19mm centre-to-centre at the bridge. They are available for purchase online and through select dealers, with prices starting at $192 for a single pickup.

With over two decades of experience in the music industry, I've worn many hats - from running a record label and a PR agency to contributing to esteemed publications like Metal Hammer and Terrorizer. I've also authored books on iconic subjects such as Kurt Cobain's guitars and The Beatles. My journey led me to the editor's chair of Guitarrista, a print magazine dedicated to the crafts of guitar playing and building. Despite this diverse background, my true passion has always leaned towards the bass guitar. I have a particular fondness for offset basses and play a Thunderbird.
