Watch Medeski Martin & Wood in their documentary 'Not Not Jazz,' directed by Jason Miller.

Oscilloscope Laboratories, in collaboration with MVD Entertainment Group, has released a documentary entitled Not Not Jazz, focusing on the band Medeski Martin & Wood as they record a new album. This release marks 25 years since the band’s formation and takes place at Allaire Studio. The documentary, directed by Jason Miller and produced by Tyler Davidson, Jim Stark, and Elie Weiss, recently premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival near its filming location in New York’s Hudson Valley and was featured at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN.

Medeski Martin & Wood, a trio that emerged in the early 1990s in New York, comprises John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Chris Wood. The group has developed their style by blending avant-garde improvisation with groove-based jazz, influenced by their early days in New York’s Downtown scene and their work with other musicians.

Not Not Jazz examines the working dynamics of Medeski, Martin, and Wood, detailing the processes they employ to create music. The documentary also discusses the broader implications of their artistic endeavours within the music industry, highlighting both the difficulties and achievements of maintaining a creative partnership over the years.

For those interested in the convergence of jazz and documentary film, Not Not Jazz is now available for viewing. It can be accessed via video on demand, Blu-ray, and DVD.

With over two decades of experience in the music industry, I've worn many hats - from running a record label and a PR agency to contributing to esteemed publications like Metal Hammer and Terrorizer. I've also authored books on iconic subjects such as Kurt Cobain's guitars and The Beatles. My journey led me to the editor's chair of Guitarrista, a print magazine dedicated to the crafts of guitar playing and building. Despite this diverse background, my true passion has always leaned towards the bass guitar. I have a particular fondness for offset basses and play a Thunderbird.
