Marillion’s bassist Pete Trewavas has provided an update on his health following recent heart surgery, conveying his appreciation for the support received by stating, “I’ve felt very loved and cared about.” Earlier, Marillion announced that Nick Beggs would be stepping in for Trewavas during the upcoming Cruise To The Edge festival, as Trewavas recovers from a triple coronary bypass graft he underwent at Harefield Hospital in Middlesex.
In a statement shared on Marillion’s Facebook page, Trewavas detailed his experience and recovery process. He explained, “So, I had a triple coronary bypass graft. Commonly known as a CABG and pronounced like the vegetable! This was done at Harefield Hospital and although invasive it is a very routine procedure for them and recovery time is usually four or five days before being discharged.”
Trewavas continued, “As I had a couple of issues, I spent five days in hospital and am now at home on the way to full recovery, which I expect to achieve over the next few weeks to few months.” He further outlined his recovery timeline, noting that he should be able to start regaining his fitness and stamina four weeks post-surgery, and plans to resume driving and gradually return to the studio six weeks after the procedure.
He praised the care he received at Harefield, acknowledging the challenges of the recovery process. “The people at Harefield were amazing and I had the best care possible. Yes, it’s been tough and I had good and bad days,” Trewavas shared.
Trewavas expressed his surprise at needing the surgery, initially believing that an angiogram would indicate the need for more stents rather than surgery. Despite the unexpected turn of events, he remained confident in the medical team’s expertise. “However, I never doubted the surgery or the team and was completely confident in their abilities all the way through,” he stated.
The outpouring of support from fans has been a source of strength for Trewavas during his recovery. He thanked his supporters for their “love, warmth, positivity, and genuine concern,” likening their messages to a “great big virtual blanket” of comfort.
Looking ahead, Marillion plans to dedicate much of 2024 to working on a new album, following the success of their 2022 release, “An Hour Before It’s Dark.” The band also has plans to reissue their post-EMI catalogue later in the year.
