Pixies have announced the release of their first music since adding Band of Skulls bassist Emma Richardson to their lineup. The new AA-side single, You’re So Impatient / Que Sera, Sera, marks the band’s first release of 2024.
The two tracks present contrasting styles, encapsulating the band’s diverse musical influences. You’re So Impatient is an explosive two-minute punk track featuring a short yet fitting guitar solo. In contrast, Que Sera, Sera is an acoustic, eerie rendition of the 1955 Doris Day classic.
Black Francis, the band’s guitarist, singer, and songwriter, provided insight into the inspiration behind the single. “You’re So Impatient is a slightly comedic suburban culture moment: there’s this guy, there’s this gal, there’s this tug-of-love dynamic going on,” he said. “But the backdrop is the mall. And while the mall is crass, it’s also a very zombie, rock ‘n’ roll horror movie setting.”
This year marks 35 years since Pixies’ sophomore album Doolittle, which catapulted the band to fame, and 20 years since their celebrated reformation at Coachella. This new chapter includes Emma Richardson, who will be joining the band on their upcoming North American, UK, and Australia/New Zealand tours.
Richardson joined the band following the departure of Paz Lenchantin, who initially became a touring bassist in 2014, replacing founding member Kim Deal. Lenchantin later became an official member in 2016, contributing to Head Carrier (2016), Beneath the Eyrie (2019), and Doggerel (2022).
Expressing her excitement about her new role, Richardson commented, “I am thrilled to announce I will be playing bass for Pixies this year on their worldwide tour! Dream come true.”
You’re So Impatient and Que Sera, Sera are available now via Pixies Recording Inc/BMG, with a limited edition 7-inch set to be released on 19 July.
