Pops Magellan releases new single ‘Deep Thoughts’

Brazilian bassist Pops Magellan releases her latest single, 'Deep Thoughts,' blending Brazilian rhythms and funk. The track is now available on streaming platforms.

Brazilian bassist Pops Magellan has released her latest single, Deep Thoughts, on streaming platforms. The track, a fusion of Brazilian maracatu rhythms, funk, rock, and electronic influences, marks the second single from her upcoming EP, Damage, set to launch in summer 2025. Magellan is a longstanding figure in the global music scene, known for her work with artists including Adam Lambert and Willow.

Describing the new single, Magellan shares, “Deep Thoughts is about those times when our minds hold us back, when thoughts start to ferment, keeping us from expanding until we’re stuck in a fog. This track is a journey through that mental loop, capturing the tension of being held back by your own mind and the release that comes when you finally break through.”

The track features Los Angeles-based drummer Noa Kahn, whose jazz and groove background complements Magellan’s melodic basslines and synths. The song’s message is personal to Magellan, who drew from her own challenges with overthinking to create a layered and danceable composition. Co-produced with Randy Emata, known for his work with Kamasi Washington, and featuring Grammy-winner Taylor Graves on synths, the single integrates live drumming, electronic beats, and Magellan’s signature bass grooves.

Deep Thoughts is part of Magellan’s broader creative vision for Damage, an EP incorporating her visual artwork alongside her music. Each track combines her bass performance with elements like synth layers and blues-inspired guitar, aiming to create a cohesive audio-visual experience. Collaborators on the EP include Justin Brown on drums and Artur Menezes on guitar, with contributions from Stevie Wonder’s drummer Stanley Randolph and multi-instrumentalist Swatkins on future tracks.

Magellan, who began her musical journey as part of her family band in Brazil, has since performed at renowned venues such as Wembley Stadium and the Royal Albert Hall.
