PreSonus Studio Channel

The PreSonus Studio Channel, a versatile channel strip, features a Class A 12AX7 tube preamp, VCA compressor, and three-band EQ, perfect for recording and live sound applications.

The PreSonus Studio Channel is a versatile channel strip designed for both studio and live performance applications. Its intended user base includes audio engineers, producers, and musicians who require a robust preamp with additional features like compression and EQ. The Studio Channel provides a tube preamp, VCA-based compressor, and three-band EQ to give users a wide range of sonic possibilities.

The tube preamp is built around a Class A 12AX7 tube that offers high headroom and a rich tonal character. With separate Gain and Tube Drive controls, the preamp can deliver a variety of tones, from transparent to overdriven. The preamp is equipped with a -20 dB pad, 80 Hz high-pass filter, and polarity reverse switch to help shape the signal.

The VCA-based compressor is known for its quick response and musicality, with controls for ratio, threshold, attack, release, and gain. An Auto Attack/Release function offers preset curves, and a Soft/Hard Knee switch allows for further control. The compressor’s performance is visualised through a backlit VU meter that displays gain reduction or output gain.

The three-band EQ offers precision control over the sound, with the option to apply EQ before or after the compressor. Each EQ stage can be bypassed independently. The midrange is fully parametric with adjustable Q, while the high and low bands are semi-parametric with selectable shelving or peak modes.

Connectivity includes a front-panel ¼-inch instrument input, rear-panel balanced ¼-inch line input, and an XLR microphone input. The outputs are balanced and available in both ¼-inch and XLR formats. The Studio Channel is housed in a rugged steel chassis with a 1U 19-inch rack-mountable design.

The PreSonus Studio Channel is available for purchase through authorised distributors and retailers.

With over two decades of experience in the music industry, I've worn many hats - from running a record label and a PR agency to contributing to esteemed publications like Metal Hammer and Terrorizer. I've also authored books on iconic subjects such as Kurt Cobain's guitars and The Beatles. My journey led me to the editor's chair of Guitarrista, a print magazine dedicated to the crafts of guitar playing and building. Despite this diverse background, my true passion has always leaned towards the bass guitar. I have a particular fondness for offset basses and play a Thunderbird.
