Reinventing a classic: Death By Audio’s Octave Clang V2 brings new depth and versatility

Explore the newly upgraded Octave Clang V2 by Death By Audio, featuring extended controls and a footswitchable octave effect for versatile sound manipulation.

Death By Audio has reintroduced its Octave Clang pedal with significant enhancements, making it more adaptable and user-friendly than its predecessor. Known for its distinctive sound, the Octave Clang combines elements of pseudo-ring modulation, distortion, noise, and octave effects. This revised version, named the Octave Clang V2, aims to offer a more expansive control range and a footswitchable octave effect, elevating its performance capabilities.

The core of the Octave Clang’s unique sound lies in its specialized circuitry, which includes a specially sourced transformer and precision-matched diodes. This setup, combined with two out-of-phase copies of the input signal, generates “extremely rich harmonics” and a “pure, totally analog octave up” effect. The pedal is particularly suited for playing single-note phrases, while strumming chords or complex note stacks can produce a more “organic and beautifully chaotic” sound.

Enhancements in the V2 model include an expanded control panel with additional knobs for more nuanced sound shaping, alongside the original Volume, Intensity, and Shape controls. A new octave footswitch has been added, allowing players to toggle the octave effect on and off, providing greater versatility in its use. The pedal’s output can vary from completely silent to exceptionally loud, and it features a pre-gain tone circuit with tilt EQ for further sound customization.

The Octave Clang V2 now offers up to +39dB of gain boost and includes internal bias controls for adjusting the distortion circuitry. This adjustment can create a rougher, more raw sound, adding to the pedal’s unique character.

Designed with practicality in mind, the pedal has top-mounted input and output jacks to accommodate pedalboard setups, although its size is slightly larger than average. Manufactured in the USA, it is compatible with a standard 9V power supply and is priced at $225. The pedal is set to be available from March 14.
