Stuart Spector launches new bass guitar model, the Tailwater

Explore the new Tailwater Bass from Esopus Guitars, a premium 32-inch handcrafted model designed by Stuart Spector with a custom Fishman piezo pickup.

Esopus Guitars, founded by Stuart Spector, known primarily for their range of acoustic guitars, has announced the release of its first bass guitar, the Tailwater. This launch marks a return to bass guitar manufacturing for Spector, who has dedicated three years to the development of this new model.

“I am proud to present the Tailwater bass, a bass that I have spent the last three years perfecting,” Stuart Spector stated. “The Tailwater is a culmination of all of my 45 years of experience, knowledge, and passion for bass guitar crafting. I am so eager to hear what fellow musicians create with this exciting new instrument.”

The Tailwater features a 32-inch scale and is crafted with a fully carved spruce top, including a built-in thumb rest. The body of the bass is a fully chambered alder, equipped with a custom Fishman piezo pickup and finished with Caranuba wax.

“Each Tailwater bass is hand-signed and numbered on the back of the peghead by myself,” Spector added. “A very limited number of Tailwater basses are handcrafted each year at the Esopus workshop.”

At this year’s NAMM show, a prototype of the Tailwater was showcased and received positive reviews for its comfort, ease of play, and unexpectedly powerful acoustic output. Notable is the Esopus TonePort, a removable feature on the back of the body that enhances sound projection and is secured with magnets.

The Esopus Tailwater is now available for purchase with a price tag of $4,995.

With over two decades of experience in the music industry, I've worn many hats - from running a record label and a PR agency to contributing to esteemed publications like Metal Hammer and Terrorizer. I've also authored books on iconic subjects such as Kurt Cobain's guitars and The Beatles. My journey led me to the editor's chair of Guitarrista, a print magazine dedicated to the crafts of guitar playing and building. Despite this diverse background, my true passion has always leaned towards the bass guitar. I have a particular fondness for offset basses and play a Thunderbird.
