Rush’s bassist and vocalist, Geddy Lee, has paid tribute to Herbie Flowers, the legendary British bassist who passed away on 5 September 2024 at the age of 86.
Known for his extensive contributions to rock music, Flowers played on an estimated 500 hit tracks, with Lou Reed’s Walk on the Wild Side standing out as one of his most recognised works. He collaborated with music icons including David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Bryan Ferry, and Marc Bolan, and was also a member of the pop group Blue Mink and the influential rock band T. Rex.
Lee shared his thoughts on Instagram, highlighting Flowers’ significance to the music world: “Recently, we lost one of rock and roll’s truly great bass players. Herbie Flowers recorded and performed with the likes of David Bowie, Lou Reed, Marc Bolan, Paul McCartney, Bryan Ferry and Elton John. Even though his name may not have been known to every rock fan, to his peers and fellow bass folk he was a bright and shining star. RIP Herbie Flowers.”
Flowers’ contributions to music spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
