Tye Trujillo reflects on performing with Korn at age 12

Tye Trujillo discusses playing with Korn at age 12 and shares the lessons learned from touring.

Tye Trujillo, son of Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo, shared his experiences of playing with Korn at the age of 12 during an interview on That Jamieson Show.

Tye joined Korn for their 2017 South American tour, stepping in as the bassist for the band. When asked about his feelings at the time, Tye explained that he experienced a mix of confidence and awe. He stated, “Well, I mean, for me, it was a little bounce between the two, learning the songs. I had the confidence and I got it from practicing, but then looking at how many people there are, I was like, ‘This is crazy too.’ So a little bit of a balance between the two.”

He elaborated on the challenges of performing in front of large audiences, noting, “These songs I have playing-wise, but then you look at the crowd, look at how crazy it is. I just think, with the crowd, I gotta tune it out a little bit and just focus on what I’m playing so I don’t get too nervous or anything. That helped me focus, not get distracted, and try my best.”

Reflecting on what he learned from touring with Korn, Tye emphasised the importance of self-discipline and time management. He said, “Outside of music, even waking up early for a lobby call or something. I didn’t really know much about that then, so I learned more about that. Now, with Suicidal Tendencies, I can just turn on my alarm. Like auto – got to wake up early, catch your flight or drive somewhere, just turn on the alarm, get up.”

Tye acknowledged the difficulty of maintaining such a routine, mentioning, “It might be hard, or it might not be hard. Sometimes, it’s hard for me to wake up early. Sometimes it’s easy. But when it’s hard, it’s tough because you want to keep sleeping in bed, but you just got to get up and get the day going.”

With over two decades of experience in the music industry, I've worn many hats - from running a record label and a PR agency to contributing to esteemed publications like Metal Hammer and Terrorizer. I've also authored books on iconic subjects such as Kurt Cobain's guitars and The Beatles. My journey led me to the editor's chair of Guitarrista, a print magazine dedicated to the crafts of guitar playing and building. Despite this diverse background, my true passion has always leaned towards the bass guitar. I have a particular fondness for offset basses and play a Thunderbird.
