“You were the glue that held the band together.” Ultravox bassist Chris Cross dies at 71

Remembering Chris Cross: Ultravox's bassist who shaped the sound of an era.

Chris Cross, the bassist known for co-founding the UK new-wave band Ultravox and co-writing their hit song Vienna, has passed away at the age of 71. The announcement was made via the band’s social media platforms.

Midge Ure, the band’s lead vocalist during its most successful period, expressed his sentiments on social media, highlighting the close personal and professional relationship he shared with Cross. “We worked together, we played together, made music and directed videos together. We were instant friends as well as Ultravox comrades,” Ure stated. He also noted the ease with which they reconnected after periods of separation: “Even after years apart we managed to pick up where we left off like the years in between never existed.”

Chris Cross, born Chris Allen, was pivotal in the establishment of Ultravox in 1974, alongside drummer Warren Cann, guitarist Stevie Shears, and Billy Currie, who initially joined as a violinist. The group, initially named Tiger Lily, was fronted by Dennis Leigh, known later as John Foxx. The transition to the Ultravox identity coincided with the release of their debut album, Ultravox!, in 1977.

Despite the early backing from Island Records and production contributions from Brian Eno and Steve Lillywhite, the band’s initial releases did not achieve significant commercial success. It was the departure of Foxx, the addition of Midge Ure, and the release of Vienna in 1980 that marked a turning point for Ultravox. The band’s sound evolved with a stronger emphasis on synthesisers under Ure’s leadership, culminating in the creation of the album Vienna, which became emblematic of ’80s synth pop.

Cross’s role in the band extended beyond playing the bass; he also contributed to the synthesiser parts, blending various musical influences that ranged from post-punk to glam rock and krautrock. Ure’s tribute underscored Cross’s integral role in the band: “You were the glue that held the band together. You were the logic in the madness and the madness in our lives. It was great to know and grow with you. You are loved and missed old friend.”

With over two decades of experience in the music industry, I've worn many hats - from running a record label and a PR agency to contributing to esteemed publications like Metal Hammer and Terrorizer. I've also authored books on iconic subjects such as Kurt Cobain's guitars and The Beatles. My journey led me to the editor's chair of Guitarrista, a print magazine dedicated to the crafts of guitar playing and building. Despite this diverse background, my true passion has always leaned towards the bass guitar. I have a particular fondness for offset basses and play a Thunderbird.
